Hectic profit-taking erased early gains with the benchmark S&P CNX Nifty ending a volatile session almost flat at National Stock Exchange (NSE) today.
The 50-share index swung widely between 5,985.00 and 5,900.25 before settling at 5,947.05, down 1.70 point, over its last close.
Trading commenced on a bearish note mirroring weakness in across the Asian markets and also due to heavy profit selling after Friday''s good gains. The key index drifted further as trading progressed.
The market took support of positive opening in European counterparts and pulled back from lower levels to trade higher in mid-afternoon. But, the recovery was short-lived and the market once again slipped into the red on heavy selling in banking and telecom spaces.
Besides Hero Honda, which rallied more than 17 per cent on the news of a new licencing pact with Honda, auto, tech and select steel counters supported the market from falling further.
Dr Reddy''s, Axis Bank, Sterlite Industries, Kotak Bank, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, SBIN, RPower, Reliance Infra and Sesa Goa were the top losers from the Nifty. However, Maruti, Cipla, TCS, IDFC, SAIL, M&M, Infosys, Gail and ACC registered handsome gains.
Total turnover in cash segment dropped to Rs 12,795.70 crore from Rs 15,306.99 crore on Thursday. A total of 6,246.54 lakh shares changed hands in 58,69,935 trades. The market capitalisation stood at Rs 69,22,200 crore
